Dr. Darrel T. Mathis has practiced in Lake City, Florida since September 14, 1989, when he assumed the practice of the late Dr. E.J. Beckman, who founded Columbia County Chiropractic in 1974. Dr. Mathis is a North Florida native, having been born in Jacksonville and growing up in Hilliard, Florida. He received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic and his certification in radiology on October 4, 1985. He received his license to practice in the State of Florida on January 6, 1986. His undergraduate work was done at Florida Junior College at Jacksonville and the University of North Florida from 1978 to 1982. Prior to coming to Lake City, Dr. Mathis practiced for almost four years in the Jacksonville area.

Dr. Mathis was the first Lake City chiropractor to be granted hospital privileges when he became a member of the staff at Lake City Medical Center in February 1991. He maintained those privileges for over seventeen years, until a hospital bylaw change did away with all non-allopathic/osteopathic staff privileges in March 2008. In 1994, Dr. Mathis was appointed to Florida’s Board of Chiropractic Examiners and became a consultant examiner in June of 1997. He continued to serve in that capacity until the state went to a National Board format in July of 2009. In November 2000, Dr. Mathis became the physician consultant overseeing Non-V.A. Care Coordination based chiropractic services for the North Florida/South Georgia District of the Veterans’ Administration Medical System. He served in that capacity until the V.A. outsourced management of chiropractic services in August of 2015. He has also served as President of the Northeast Florida Chiropractic Society and as a member of the Florida Chiropractic Association’s Ethics and Medicare Committees.

Dr. Mathis is board certified in chiropractic orthopedics and is a Diplomate of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists. He also holds certifications in sports medicine, utilization review and as a chiropractic consultant.

In addition to his many professional activities, Dr. Mathis is also active in the community. He has been a Rotarian since 1991, serving in a number of positions, including president of the Rotary Club of Lake City 1999-2000. In 2003, he accepted the task of chartering a second Rotary club in Lake City and served as the charter president of the Rotary Club of Lake City Downtown, 2003-2004. He served as Assistant Governor, District 6940, for a three-year term 2007-2010. He is also a past president of Columbia Soccer Boosters, Inc. and was president of the Parent Organization of the Class of 2013, Inc. He is currently a committee chair of Boy Scout Troop 85.
